Huck Finn P4

The book has reached its final climax, but that doesn’t mean that the end wasn’t interesting/ boring/ kind of stupid. There were a lot of things that I could not agree with while reading the end. There are some things I could be completely fine with, but not these.

I appreciated Tom Sawyer’s return to our novel it kind of felt awkward without having him go on ranting about his imagination half the chapter. I did not like how he made a plan to save someone just to have fun. I can understand why he did it, but you don’t make fun of a person’s freedom. Like, someone’s life is on the line. Show some more appreciation than just almost throwing him to the dogs that already put him there once. I could not imagine a more dire situation then that however. He could have made things so much simplier, but nooooo you had to have your own little adventure.

I understand Tom envied Huck for having his own little adventure, but that doesn’t mean you have to make a new one out of the blue. The way I see it Tom let his jealousy and imagination get the better of him. I don’t think he would usually have this stupid of an idea, but this part of the story just made the cake.

I liked how Huck still wanted freedom in the end even after all his adventures. Wanting freedom is in and of itself an adventure. If he had another book, well I would like to know what its about, but not read it. The plot really was dull. Just another kid moving from one place to another getting into random situations. I already seen enough of that on TV. I could sure watch a re-run five times and understand it more than Huck Finn.

Huck Finn P3

The two new characters they placed in Huck Finn well let’s say I dislike them greatly because hate is a strong word. I don’t like them, but they help develop the moral side of Huck. The Duke and the King are downright scoundrels and con-men. The type of people I totally dislike. If it weren’t for other people being in the room, I would thrown it out the window.

The Duke and King have avarice. The greed for wealth is a strong and tough thing to break. Everyone loves money and everybody wants money. It is an endless cycle of give and take when it comes to avarice. The way I see it when you get something through solicitation, that it comes back to spite you in the end. It works the same way with these two buffoons.

I liked the part between Boggs and Sherburn. I liked it mostly because I saw Sherburn as a man who did not fear what others said about him. I liked him because he was not a part of social prejudice, but what worried me a bit was his speech. It sounded as if he was ready to die and ready to take anyone willing to take him on. I was actually afraid for him for a moment.

Huck is simply amazing with his next ingenious plan in order to put the Duke and King in their place, but sadly it did not work. That was the big bomb that was dropped on me when I found out. It was a great plan and I loved it because it showed a part of his morality. People need to be more aware that people use people and deception is an art that is used everyday in our lives.

Huck Finn P2

Well for starters how we left off on the first chapter and stuff, Huck is an idiot for forgetting his own alias the one HE made. That is just sure fire stupid. When making up a name for yourself make sure to remember it Huck. I also found it so interesting that the women was so perceptive about Huck’s actions when he dressed as a girl. She noticed details that I wouldn’t even think of and I like watching detective shows. I found it kind of said that I believe I wouldn’t notice these details. I have an affluence for the truth, yet I myself cannot see the truth. This is not a saying that bodes well with me, but I accept it.

Huck is a very very smart kid especially at his age, but to put up a fake fire in an escape plan was pure ingenious, and it kind of redeemed him from his stupidity from before. Diversions are funny, but that plan was beyond what any normal person would think of during that kind of situation.

Huck is also a very brave sort and holds a strong sense of morality. He and Jim board an abandoned boat, and find two guys bout to murder another guy and he stays there. Definitely, only a crazy person would go and do that sort of antic. I liked the sense of morality though as he sent people to go fetch the murderers that were on the ship.

I found Huck and Jim’s conversation about the French to be kind of unnneccessary and I say it as a filler in a way. I thought it was placed just to take up room. In a way though, it did make sense. Jim denies that every man is different, while Huck agrees that every man is the same. This becomes a thoughtful issue because if a Frenchman is not different from an American that means there is some sort of equality, an equality that we don’t see between blacks and whites during this era.

Huck Finn P1

The book in general is a continuation of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huckleberry Finn has a more interesting approach to making people aware of what was going on back then. This is still the time before the Civil War because people still owned slaves. A reader now wouldn’t even pay attention to a book like this because it paid to much attention to the past. No one is concerned about the past, what we rely on now is the future. I, however, do not think this at all. Huck Finn has many lessons to teach, but it also shows what life was like beyond what we learn in history books.

We would usually think that the past was happy go lucky, and everyone got along. That definitely not true especially about after what was read in this book. There were moments of domestic violence that mostly affected Huck because of his father. Religion also played a big role because the way I always saw it, was that religion supposedly played a huge role in the lives of the American people. Huck Finn made me think twice about what I read in a history book. I think books that were written by people that actually lived in those times and eras are completely more reliable than today’s history books.

I found it interesting when reading that Huck had met Jim on the island. It kind of is a twist because no one would expect a slave especially a run away aligning himself with a white male. Even for Huck’s age I found it weird that Jim would actually stick with Huck. I found oddly strange that Huck had to dress up as a girl though. I have read and seen instances where a guy would dress as a girl, but Huck Finn took it too far when he cross-dressed and acted like a girl.

The Cold Dish Part 3

Well the ending is not what was expected, but it was quite interesting. The fact it was an unexpected person or someone whom no one would expect is kind of disappointing. It also kind of enrages me that there was such an ending. I would have wanted to be able to solve the case, but the evidence was sloppy and did not present much help at all. I would point out also that it was difficult to ascertain the psyche of the culprit. Usually to discover a killer one would have to be able to get into the same mindset of a killer. The point being since the killer was unexpected, there was no way to ascertain the reason behind the crime. There was absolutely no follow up or any notice at who the culprit would be. I hate the fact that the real culprit was never even suspected. Any person could call that the perfect crime, but in a book it should have been noticed easily and just had more excitement.

The Cold Dish Part 2

The story has finally had a new turn in the case. Suprisingly enough, I’m starting to enjoy the book even more. The downside in this book is that it does not completely focus on the mystery and crime at hand. It feels really annoying actually. I understand that there should be some amoumt of character development, but not to the extent that most of the story focuses on it. The book has added a little bit more enthusiam and mystery, but it is less exciting than one would expect. I can understand completely why there is so much character development, but this book is part of a series. There is so much time to focus on character development. I understand fully though that each book could focus on a certain acpect of the sheriff’s life. This mystery is interesting, but it offers no real cause for alarm. The way these people died was not interesting at all. I dont’t know if I should be disappointed. In all truth I was expecting a more gruese murder one that would put a chill in my bones. So far, that is nothing, but a figure of imagination. I hope the books plot gets a little more interesting.

The Cold Dish P1

The Cold Dish is a mystery book written by Craig Johnson. It seemed like a good read at first, but at this point I’m not so liking the mystery behind it. The book goes on and on about the main character, Walt Longmire’s, personal life. It is what to expect from a mystery book though. I didn’t expect a mystery with full action packed suspense. If I imagine reading a different mystery novel, I can say for sure that the mystery would get boring if it not for the main characters own personal problems. I found many of these parts most interesting and funny up to the point. The book uses some “foul” language, but I do not mind it. Knowing the setting of the story is in some back water county out in Wyoming somewhere, I can be rest assured that it would not seem real unless they used foul language. So far, the investigation into the death of a young man still has no leads and at this point they’re still looking for suspects and more evidence to support the story. That IS so far though. Getting further and further into the book I hope to see the evidence actually becoming insufficient. I am not sure myself why I would want that, but it adds a little more suspense into the mystery. The unknown is most interesting it is no fun knowing what is going to happen. It is like watching a re-run of the same show and just point out what is going on. There is no fun in it unless it is unsuspecting and in fact probably not the way you or another viewer could have pictured it. Murder is most interesting in that aspect. The way the victim was murdered. The motive behind the death. And the conclusion that pop up because of it. Not once in my lifetime of watching criminal investigation shows and not like the hardcore ones, but the ones that offer little comedy, I have not once seen a murder that could be considered an “impossible” crime. Imagine, a tightly sealed room, doors and window all locked, but there is a hanged victim in the middle. You can consider that a regular suicide, but what if there was a huge amount of physical evidence to support the fact that it was not suicide? That would be a mystery worth solving and an even more interesting turn of events in how that crime was committed. I hope that twists will occur in the future during my reading

Devil and Tom Walker

The Devil and Tom Walker was a most interesting read, but it mostly told of the things we as humans shouldn’t do. The greed or avarice as I like to call it for it gives off a more menacing tone is a fault and will always be a fault of humans. We hold an avarice like no other. We want everything, literally EVERYTHING! We go through life wishing we had certain qualities and hoping to attain them, but we take it a little too far. We make ourselves believe in something we really don’t even care about. We will want something knowing that we don’t really need it, but the greed builds itself up and we can’t stop our own avarice. Avarice is not only corruption, it is a sort of gluttony. We feed ourselves so much of avarice, we become consumed by it. Avarice begins to take over our own mind states and ways of thinking. Those who let it go too far become over confident and in some cases megalomaniacs. Greed affects all parts of us. If we gain too much and become used too it, we begin too feel that is a naturally adaption and we will keep gaining it in the future. We can deny that we hold no real greed, but that is not true. Even those that help others on a daily basis are greedy. They seek the satisfaction that they have done something good even if they don’t receive the thanks they should have. I can say that is a personal greed, but it is at the same time not a bad type of greed. That is where greed can be confusing at some point. There is a good type of greed and a bad type. A good type of greed could be best described as one that could affect someone else and be done for impersonal goals. A bad type of greed could be described as doing only for personal profit and/ or goals. It is difficult to imagine greed as being a good thing only due to the fact it is one of the seven deadly sins, but also for the fact that it can be used and described in a variety of ways. All in all the main point of the Devil and Tom Walker was that Tom was greedy and in every sense of the word, and I can’t find any statement that could refute that.

Scarlet Letter Part 6

It is sad how the hearts of mankind can be plagued upon so easily. The seven sins of our very human nature: lust, greed, envy, wrath, pride, sloth, and gluttony. We are always caught up in one or the other. There is no way to stop it, it is human nature. The scarlet letter I believe symbolizes all of these. Hester has lust and pride. Dimmesdale has sloth and lust. Chillingworth has greed, envy, wrath, and gluttony. Dimmesdale would definitely be described as a sloth because of the fact that he has not done anything until the final scaffold scene. Hester and Dimmesdale both share the lust and its result is Pearl. Chillingworth is definitely best described through the final four. The greed he holds is a result of want for more pain and revenge. The envy I believe is that he is jealous of Dimmesdale for he has something he no longer has or deserves and that would be Hester. The wrath Chillingworth is best described through how he had tortured Dimmesdale over the years. His gluttony is that he fed himself through all of Dimmesdale’s pain absorbing it into his own being and wanting more of it. The book itself can be also interpreted to mean that we should be left astray from the seven sins and push ourselves towards the six virtues. In the old days when religion was regarded as absolute, many may have believed the book to be a forewarning. That we should be happy that we no longer live in that kind of culture anymore. Though cheating on your husband or wife should be an offense, it is now handled legally. I do believe the six virtues can apply to the reading, but I am skeptical as to how many of them could actually apply to it. Chillingworth’s death later on is a significant factor because he has been released from his bond of revenge, but I doubt he felt any remorse. His death was pitiful to say the least. He dies a year later after Dimmesdale because he no longer has anyone to torture. It sounds so pitiful to die in such a manner and still hold remnants of a grudge. There is no amnesty for the wicked only mercy and depending on the person forgiveness.

Scarlet Letter Part 5

Many things have changed. In Hester, Pearl, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, they have all grown and follow a path. Hester’s path to follow leads her to want to runaway with Dimmesdale and Pearl. Pearl’s path is live out the rest of her life in her playful manner. Dimmesdale’s path where he has found reconciliation with himself and in Hester and Pearl. Chillingworth has kept on the path he had sworn from day one and will not veer off of it. He still seeks the revenge and it is a burning flame inside his heart. He has no satisfaction and continues on his journey of revenge until the day he falls and realizes what he has done, I believe he will never find solace. If his revenge is indeed complete what else could he live for? Continue the burden of being a physician? I believe not. Once you start getting addicted to something, it only ends when you make it end or when that addiction spontaneously stops. His lust for revenge not only has fed his rage, but has also burdened his heart I believe. Every step of torture he performs, he begins to lose sight of why he started to cast the dark shadow or revenge. By the time he stops, it will be something he can no longer control. It will become a hunger ready to unleash its deadly force upon his very mind. He will begin to lose his sanity and no longer be able to tell if he has overstepped the bounds of what he promised not to do. Once you start down a path, there is no turning back. What you have done is your choice along and that cannot be changed. If the path you’ve chosen changes you, then only you are at fault for walking that far. You can continue walking down the same path, but change what you’ve become. Otherwise, you will stay the abomination of which you swore never to become. We are all sinners in our own way. Though we may not know it we carry with us very essence of the seven deadly sins. We are all sinful no matter who we are, we each have had the moment to feel each of the seven sins. We are only human. And Chillingworth is portrayed just the same, human.
